One of the last Princely bastions in the south-western of Thar Desert is Jaisalmer. Its fort, perched high, is made of golden sandstone. A 'living fort, within its walls flourishes a whole town with markets, restaurant, houses and a hotel. Remarkable is the aesthetic sense that pervades the Rajasthan Forts, palaces and havelis here. Carved to amazing perfections, the facades of sculptural filigree, screen windows and jharokhas are simply awesome. Even humblest shops and dwellings the Rajputs' love for decorations.

Jaisalmer is a large place to cleanly wander around in. Whether inside the fort, or in the markets below the rise, it has its own charm. The Jaisalmer fort was founded in 1156 by king Jaisal is entered throughout a hostile series of considerable gates. The Havelis of Jaisalmer are The impressive mansion built in sandstone. Patwon-Ki-Haveli is the most extensively carved. Nathmalji-Ki-haveli was as well a prime minister's residence. impressed by two brothers, one running on the right part and the other on the left. Yellow stonework elephants guard the construction and the other on the left, yellow sandstone elephants guard the building, where yet the front door is a work of art. within the fort walls are a group of beautifully carved Jain Temples built between the 12th and 15th centuries. They are dedicated to Rishabhdev and Sambhavnath. Gyan Bhandar is a library that houses some of the oldest manuscripts. A scenic rainwater lake outside the fort, Gadsisar Lake is surrounded by numerous beautiful shrines, and has a legend woven around it.

Multi-hued rungs, bedspreads and table-cloths in Kutchh embroidery, mirror work and appliqué styles are good buys. Camel leather goods, like hats, bags ,and juttis and tripod stools are great buys here. Silver jewellery too can be picked up, but if you have the means to carry them beak, panels carved in stones and jharokhas with the famed jali work are the best buys.

Jaisalmer by Air: Though Jaisalmer airport would be operational in 2013. In the past the airstrips provided by the Indian Air Force provided for Alliance Air to operate flights to Jodhpur , Jaipur Mumbai and Delhi form Jaisalmer. At the moment there are no scheduled fights to the city connected. Jodhpur remains the nearest airport at 330 Kms away.

Jaisalmer by Rail: Two trains operate daily to Jodhpur.

Jaisalmer by Road: Deluxe buses operate daily form Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Jaipur and Bikaner.

Getting around in Jaisalmer: Jeeps can be hired form Gandhi Chowk for Excursions. www.fortsandpalaceofrajasthan.com organises hired cars for travel in and around the city. Auto rickshaws are available for the intrepid travellers and a trip form the Railway stationt to centrally located hotels costs approximately Rs. 50-100.
